FAQs

How difficult is this trip?

This is considered a 'hard' backcountry adventure. We'll cover 70+ miles, hiking 5 to 8 hours a day with elevation gains between 500 and 2,500 feet. Most of our trek is above 10,000 feet; Everest Base Camp is the highest point at 18,372 feet. This trek is accessible for most age levels who maintain good physical fitness, have previous multi-day hiking experience, and recognize the inherent unpredictability of hiking at altitude in remote areas.

Our support staff will be with us for the entirety of the adventure, ensuring our safety, setting up camp, and helping us experience the true Himalayan experience.

What if I have special dietary needs?

Traveling with dietary restrictions or allergies can be a challenge, but we’re here to help. Prior to your departure, we’ll send you a questionnaire where you can inform us of any special dietary needs you have. Depending on the information you give us, we will work with our Nepal team to adjust menus and be aware of allergies and restrictions on the trip.

What about supplements if I am traveling solo?

Prices are based on double occupancy. If you are a solo traveler and want to have your own accommodations, a $600 supplement will apply at checkout. These spots are extremely limited and available first-come, first-serve.

Please note that while we are able to confirm single rooms at our boutique properties in Kathmandu at the beginning and end of our trip, single accommodations may not be available from Day 8 thru Day 13 due to the nature of the family-run mountain lodges we stay at. Requests will be made but we cannot guarantee Single rooms on these nights.

Who is this trip appropriate for?

This adventure is recommended for travelers aged 18 and above who are in excellent health and have previous experience with multi-day backpacking.

Pre-trip physical conditioning should begin no later than 2 months before departure and should include walking or hiking (see Get Ready).

Who is going on this trip?

This adventure is recommended for travelers aged 18 and above. We will be joined by Outside editor Matt Skenazy and no more than 12 fellow adventurers, plus your Modern Adventure team.

We will also be joined by expert expedition guides, each highly qualified in all necessary skills to safely travel through the Himalayas.

Are transfers included?

On Day 1, Modern Adventure will organize transfers from Kathmandu's international airport to our hotel (see Travel & Logistics for details).

On our last day, Modern Adventure will arrange a complimentary transfer to Kathmandu's airport.

How much can the itinerary change?

While we do our best to follow our itineraries, certain factors may cause our guides to deviate. These considerations include weather conditions, group preference, individual ability, safety, or unforeseeable circumstances—what many call “The Everest Factor.”

Internal flight / helicopter times may also vary based on any number of similar factors. Like any adventure, approach our time in Nepal with an open mind.

Note that on Day 11, we will hike from Lobuche to tiny outpost of Gorakshep (17,100 ft) and evaluate the weather conditions. If safe, we will proceed on the 4.5-mile roundtrip to Everest Base Camp (18,372 ft), with a return after dark. In low-visibility and/or unstable weather, our alternate destination is 4-mile roundtrip hike to Kala Patthar (18,190 ft).

What travel documents are needed?

US citizens require a valid passport, and can obtain the mandatory Nepal travel visa on arrival at Kathmandu's airport for $50, for stays up to 30 days. It is recommended that your passport is valid for six months after your travels are over.

For citizens of other countries, please check with a Nepalese Embassy or Consulate for information and requirements.

What is the cancellation policy?

You may cancel on or before June 6, 2022 and receive a full refund minus a $500 per-person service fee. If you cancel on or after June 7, 2022 there is a 50% cancellation fee. On or after August 5, 2022 there is a 100% cancellation fee.

Travel insurance is required (see Get Ready) as we are not able to make exceptions to this policy in cases of family/medical emergency or cases of the trip being canceled (see our Terms and Conditions for full details).

Do I need travel insurance?

Travel insurance for this trip is required. Since this adventure takes place in some remote locations, it can be difficult and expensive to plan medical evacuations. It is each guest’s responsibility to be covered by emergency medical, evacuation and repatriation insurance, or to be prepared to cover the cost yourself, for expenses related to an emergency medical evacuation and repatriation (see Get Ready).
