What To Expect

Modern Adventures are designed to showcase the best of a destination, and to promote community, sharing and celebration of Nepal's natural wonders. We curate all elements for a safe, immersive adventure.

The Everest Experience

Get ready for a life-list adventure in Nepal! Shimmering lakes, snow-capped Himalayan peaks as far as you can see—get ready for an unforgettable adventure on one of the world's most legendary treks to Everest Base Camp.

We travel alongside Outside magazine’s Matt Skenazy, and take in the country’s most sacred sites and stunning mountain passes, with twelve days of fully supported Himalaya trekking—all accommodations, transport, food, guides, porters and permits taken care of—plus the opportunity to connect to Nepal’s timeless traditions thriving at monasteries, markets, and remote mountain villages.

We’ll be trekking at altitudes well above 10,000 feet (our highest point in Everest Base Camp itself at 18,372 ft), challenging both our minds and bodies. We'll spend two luxurious nights in Kathmandu at both the beginning and end of our trip; in between it's 12 days of incredible Himalayan adventure. This is Nepal at its most pure and exhilarating.

Activity Level: Hard

We'll cover 70+ miles, hiking 5 to 8 hours a day with elevation gains between 500 and 2,500 feet, sticking mostly to established trails. We’ll be trekking at altitudes above 10,000 feet, peaking at Everest Base Camp itself at 18,372 ft.

This trek is accessible for most age levels who maintain good physical fitness, have previous multi-day hiking experience, and recognize the inherent unpredictability and demands of hiking at altitude in remote areas.

We strongly recommend that you begin your physical conditioning at least two months prior to departure (see Get Ready).

How We Eat

Nearly all meals are provided, with the exception of dinner in Kathmandu on Day 1.

On the trek, all meals and snacks are provided for you. We’ll be traveling with a fully staffed camp kitchen, and provide all kitchen supplies and utensils (see Gear & Packing). We'll also eat at mountain lodges ('tea houses') along the way, enjoying a mix of Western foods and Nepali staples including dal bhat (rice, lentils, vegetable or chicken curry), momos (dumplings) and Indian-style roti breads.

Special Dietary Needs

Traveling with dietary restrictions or allergies can be a challenge, but we’re here to help. Prior to your departure, we’ll send you a questionnaire where you can inform us of any special dietary needs you have. Depending on the information you give us, we will work with our Nepalese partners to adjust menus and be aware of allergies and restrictions on our trip. We kindly request that any changes to our menu are based on need rather than preference, as we work very hard to curate an exceptional dining experience that is difficult to change in the remote backcountry.

Where We Sleep

We spend two luxurious nights in Kathmandu at both the beginning and end of our trip, with all the comforts you'd expect, including swimming pools and spas perfect for preparing minds and bodies for our adventures to come, and for celebrating our successful return.

On the trek we camp for two nights (on Days 3 and 7) in expedition-quality mountaineering tents (supplied by us - see Gear & Packing) and fully supported by our guides, camp cook and trekking crew. Other nights on the trail we stay in family-run mountain lodges ('tea houses'), a centuries-old Nepalese tradition. Most have simple facilities (the higher the elevation, the simpler the facilities) typically with open fireplaces, communal dining areas, and shared bathrooms. These are classic, humble way stations, places to break bread and reflect on the day’s adventures and replenish ourselves for the day to come.
